Questions for Your First Time in Therapy

Who goes to therapy?

Short answer: Anyone and everyone.

Longer answer: Individuals and families who want to engage in their own work to gain clarity and perspective, develop tools to create a more balanced lifestyle, and cultivate a healthy and fulfilling life.

All of us will face challenges and struggles in our lives, whether we acknowledge them or not. The cards we’re dealt in life can present us with various difficulties, causing emotional pain and hindering personal growth. Many of our clients share how much they value working with us as we offer a safe and supportive space to listen and guide, utilize our expertise in concerns our clients bring, and engage in authentic human-to-human relationships.

I've never done therapy before, and I'm a little nervous. What should I expect from working with you and from therapy in general?

We’ve been there. We know what it’s like to be the client meeting with a therapist and how vulnerable and nerve-wracking that can feel. It can be common to experience some nervousness about starting therapy sessions for the first time or talking to someone who is still a stranger to us. Most new things are uncomfortable because they are unfamiliar and our old narratives and beliefs can get in the way.

Our therapists are warm and inviting, help new clients feel at ease, provide education and support you to implement right away as well as other tools and skills. Our therapists also bring a decent sense of humor to the table, as we get how life will either make us laugh or cry or both. We are committed to helping you find your inner strength to heal and grow, and we will be engaged with you in the process. Therapy is an interactive and shared experience. Many clients at Rooted Counseling share that they feel comfortable, safe, and supported meeting with our highly skilled therapists.

How do I know if this is right for me?

Let’s chat over a free 15-minute phone consultation to help sort through the questions you have. During this call, we can learn more about you and your experience, share about ourselves and our practice, and determine if we would be a good fit in working together. If so, we’ll schedule our first session, called an Intake and send you the paperwork to get started right away.

Finding a therapist you can trust and be yourself with is vital to doing valuable clinical work that can positively impact your life. Feeling comfortable enough with your therapist to be honest and really talk about what’s going on will only make the progression of therapy better and more meaningful for you. If we decide for any reason that we’re not the best fit in working together, we are committed to helping you find other resources and trusted professionals who may be an even better fit to support you.

What is Telehealth and how does it work?

Telehealth, sometimes called Teletherapy or online counseling, is a convenient and effective method of accessing therapy sessions via live video conference. At Rooted Counseling, we offer online Teletherapy utilizing a HIPAA compliant video conferencing tool that is user-friendly and secure. All you need is a reliable internet connection, a webcam and microphone on your computer, and to be in a comfortable and private space during our sessions. Many clients find this method of therapy to be supportive and convenient for full schedules and time constraints (you don’t have to commute). Telehealth sessions can be easily accessed over your lunch hour or other flexible times in your day as well as in the privacy of your own space. Telehealth has grown tremendously over the past decades and especially during COVID because it allows clients to engage in therapy outside of the traditional therapist’s office.
